Dean "Dean's Pool Tips"
Good question, it ... By: getlois. on 13 Sep 08, 16:58:51 Good question, it depends on what rules you play by. In the APA any time you make the 8-ball on the break without scratching it's a win. If you also scratch, it's a loss. This is true regardless of what other balls may be made on the break shot.
In BCA play if the 8-ball is made on the break it's simply spotted and the game continues.
Thanks for the comment this is a popular question.

By: getlois. on 13 Sep 08, 16:47:36 Hey and thanks for the comment - I have a few cues for shooting and one for breaking, for less than $50 I get a solid break shot with a three-piece Jump/Break Pool Cue, I can break it down for a jump shot and also works great as a short cue in tight spaces too.
My cue has a 14mm one-piece phenolic tip and ferrule. It measures a standard 58" long and is 21 oz weight. Three-piece cue measurements: Shaft 28-3/4" Middle 15-1/8" Bottom 16-1/2".

This is exactly why ... By: getlois. on 23 Oct 08, 05:10:49 This is exactly why we become inconsistant, we think too much. Lock in to what works right down to how you stand, stroke, eye movement etc...be consistant and practice and try not to out think yourself, relax and do what works, shoot with confidence, never second guess yourself when executing a shot.
Sounds easy but it's not, give it a try and get back, like to know how your doing.

Many players ... By: getlois. on 23 Oct 08, 05:27:28 Many players mistakenly call these spins english. Both expressions may be combined to explain the point of the cue ball aimed at for a shot. Call it what you want, but many players still call this english.
That shot isn't the ... By: 2hvy4grvty. on 18 Oct 08, 01:09:47 That shot isn't the best example of draw vs follow.
1. If you get to the point where you're actually learning draw and follow, either shot would've been easy, neither would be a "better" shot.
2. IF you were straight in, it would have been a "better" choice to draw it back. I'd rather take a cut than a scratch.
3. Rolling the ball with a center ball hit would've given you great position as well.
4. There's no such thing as top "English". English refers to the x-axis of the cue ball.

IE: Imagine 2 shots, for both shots the cue ball is hit at 3:00, however shot #1 was hit at a 30 degree angle while shot 2 was hit at an 80 degree angle. The first shot should travel down the table for quite some distance (depending on speed of course) before it breaks off the initial target line and begins to swerve to the right, however shot #2 should almost instantly begin to swerve to the right!

The weight of the ... By: getlois. on 14 Sep 08, 22:28:13 The weight of the cue shoudn't matter, it's how you stroke down on the cue ball. Remember you are creating spin on the cue ball in order to change its direction, if you put enough back spin on the cue ball hitting it 6 inches forward, it will come straight back to the point of contact, now if you move the tip slightly left or right it will curve, play around with this and observe the results. Cue elevation is key when doing this shot, be careful not to damage the felt.
Good luck.

Well, since you're ... By: OsirisGOLAD. on 20 Apr 08, 16:31:16 Well, since you're playing it a bit harder than I personally would it could be a massé where the spin grabs the cloth and curves it. But what happens on a swerve is that you sort of 'push the ball into the cloth' sideways(it's relatively slow). The cueball wants to go to the side with least friction and wants to go to the objectball. A massé shot grabs the cloth with spin, whereas a swerve slides and creates a sort of 'no-pressure zone' on the cloth, like one part of the table is lower.
Thanks for your ... By: getlois. on 19 Apr 08, 17:23:33 Thanks for your comments - I am familiar with a Swerve Shot based on your description, in my video there is not enough distance to execute a "Swerve Shot" so I had to Masse - and yes I did have to grab the cloth to get around my object ball at a short distance -

Swerveshot is the ... By: OsirisGOLAD. on 16 Feb 08, 17:58:05 Swerveshot is the term that is used for this kind of shot in snooker. The difference between a swerve-shot and a massé is that swerveshot doesn't actually change it's direction because the ball grabs the cloth. It changes direction because the spin(which is diagonal relative to the table) creates less friction on one side of the ball at the moment your cue hits the ball. If this was a massé, the ball would keep curving in the same angle until it hit something.
A what? A complete ... By: getlois. on 16 Feb 08, 06:20:38 A what? A complete reversal of cueball direction would be the most radical example; however, the Massé in this video did not require it. Yes, there is such thing as "Slight Massé" not all Massé shots are radical, I guess you call this a "Swerve" shot, that is a new one for me, I'll have to research this shot and see if it even exists.
Thanks for the comment
Dean
This is a swerve, ... By: OsirisGOLAD. on 15 Feb 08, 16:37:46 This is a swerve, not a massé shot. Massé grabs the cloth, swerve makes the ball sort of slip back and makes it return to it's original line(if you strike it properly). For this shot you wouldn't even have to elevate the cue that much.

I just like to say that you have to remember when giving out tips that beginners are watching more closely to things that we(experienced players) don't pay attention to as much anymore ... such as ... cue elevation, stance, bridge, etc. For Example: I see in some videos you bridge higher than others when not needed or in this video you should stay between to pockets as much as you can to avoid scratching and keep it simple.

You are correct, ... By: silentfilmstar13. on 05 Dec 08, 13:02:36 You are correct, freakandfrak. To illustrate, consider this exaggeration: move the obect ball and the cue ball a full diamond right each. Just like the two inch demonstration, the angle remains the same. If you hit the shot, you will fall way short. When moving the origin point but not the destination point, you do need to adjust your angle's vertex. The ball still dropped in his 2 inch shot because the vertex simply needs a 1 inch adjustment, which fell within his shot's margin of error.
You would be ... By: getlois. on 03 May 08, 20:31:21 You would be correct if I didn't move the cue ball 2" also. The agle stays the same because you moved both the cue ball and the object ball 2" to the right - Use the diamonds as a guide based on measurement, of course if your stroke is off you will miss, and don't hit to hard, the rail will not have time to react and create the angle you desire - Lots of factors in bank shots, practice and decide what works best for you -

Before making a shot decide what you want to do first ... alot of people miss easy shots because they didn't fully commit the shot and where they wanted the cue ball be for the next shot. Try to think 3 balls ahead ... create angles for 2 shots ahead ... being too straight on sucks unless it's the last ball to shoot. Also ... if distracted ... get up and walk to the opposite side of shot ... it allows time to forget about what distracted you. Then Commit
Yes, this works ... By: getlois. on 10 Feb 08, 20:16:00 Yes, this works very well for me, I sometimes neglect this rule when in a hurry, pool is a very patient sport unless your playint "Speed Pool".
Good Luck in your game

Thanks a lot for ... By: igorchete. on 09 Feb 08, 21:14:35 Thanks a lot for the tips. I'm sort of a beginner pool player, and yes, the shot visualisation tip really helps. Before, i usually followed my instincts for predicting where will the white ball end up at, but with visualising it's much more efficient!
Thanks.
You sound like to ... By: getlois. on 20 Jan 08, 08:02:32 You sound like to good player and yes distractions come easy when your not in the zone. Sometimes I'll close my eyes and go through the shot in my head then execute the shot... might sound funny but it works.
Thanks for writing and good luck with your game.

By: getlois. on 13 Sep 08, 17:56:34 Thanks for the comment, and you are correct about hitting the rail first on a rail shot, I was mostly focusing on "Combination Shots" and didn't pay too much attention to that particular shot, I was a bit rushed when doing this tip - I hope you are sharing your experience with new pool players, we need to make this sport as popular as other sports e.g. Golf, Tennis, NASCAR Etc...Pro Pool Players should have the same opportunity as other High Profile sports figures. I am sorry to say, ... By: obilo5. on 12 May 08, 21:17:09 I am sorry to say, but that is wrong, unless you're just a few inches from the pocket. Hitting the rail and ball at the same time is a recipe for a miss. Hit the rail just a fraction of a inch before the object ball. The harder you hit the cue ball, the more distance you need from the object ball. You see, the cushion compresses allowing the cue to hit the object ball at the real contact point.
And, never use outside english on rail shots unless you know how to compensate for deflection.
I am not a teacher ... By: shortstop20. on 23 Apr 08, 12:57:39 I am not a teacher by any means but I have been playing for 5 years or so. When shooting at an object ball that is on the rail you want to hit the object ball and the rail at the same time basically. Keep in mind the angle you are shooting at in relation to the rail will dictate which part of the cue ball must contact the object ball first. This is what most beginners have the most trouble with.....knowing exactly what point on the cue ball has to hit the object ball first.

You would still ... By: getlois. on 02 Jul 08, 15:38:31 You would still need to cheat the pocket unless you already have an angle, there are other ways but this is easier and you don't have to use any English. Don't make this game hard, when you have a shot keep it simple, don't get crazy because you can. Position your cue ball so you each shot will naturally setup for the next shot, try this and run out with out using english, Good Luck

First of all you ... By: getlois. on 02 Jul 08, 15:29:03 First of all you are not an "Idiot"
Don't be so hard on yourself, even older pool players ask me this question. First practice your stroke, then take just the cue ball and place it on the table. When you line up your cue tip with the center of the Cue Ball, I want you to move the tip slightly to the left, now hit it straight into the side rail soft to medium and watch what happens, and remember the result.
Good Luck
Dean
Typically we use ... By: getlois. on 02 Jul 08, 15:16:56 Typically we use the word English when we are creating cue ball spin by hitting the cue ball slightly to the left or right, this measurement is usually about 1 tip to the left or right of the center of the cue ball. Try hitting the cue ball into the side rail, medium to soft stroke 1/4, 1/2 and 1 full tip to either side, see the reaction and remember the result.
Thanks
Dean
Very Cool, you went ... By: getlois. on 02 Jul 08, 15:07:02 Very Cool, you went out and jumped the ball after one video, that is awesome! Know, practice your stroke, get it perfectly straight, then work on your hit, you don't have to kill this ball to make it go straight, in fact the harder you hit the harder it is.... Good Luck

That was a Masse ... By: getlois. on 02 Jul 08, 15:03:22 That was a Masse shot, a little down spin combined with some down spin, and shoot the ball just to the side of your opponents ball, don't have to hit this to hard... play around with it and let me know how your doing.

By: getlois. on 16 Sep 07, 17:38:20 Over stroking is common with most players, even myself but if executed with perfect stroke this shot is a "Game Winner" - I just placed 2nd out of 16 players at Stix Billiards and I've never had to "Masse" as many times as needed that day, but I was playing some tough players and found myselp "Burried" most of the time... a great shot to know when in this situation... I guess you could, but if you can get your bridge hand to do the job then do it, may take some practice. Now if you have really small hands, you may need a bridge to get the elevation required for this shot. Good Luck Dean

This shot is fun, but takes a little practice. First hit your cue ball into the rail not to hard and see if you can get it to jump back over a ball, then work on your accuracy. Good luck and have fun, remember to shoot a little above center and elevate slightly, about 1 foot from the rail - Thanks for your comment - Dean

Hey Dean. Great videos mate :) Jump shot question. From you opinion, can you give me a rating score ( / 10 ) on each cue stick VS the % accuracy and reliability when performing jump shots (1) Your typical used cue stick at a bar (2) brand new cue stick with big tip (3) brand new with small tip (4) jump cue stick. Thanks

yeah make a video on masse!
By: amerikanerMarinen. on 31 Dec 07, 19:26:08
when you strike the cue ball, the stick is coming down in a left/right angle, putting a left or right spin on the ball so when the ball hits the table, it catches the surface and curves.

can u make a video about massa
By: getlois. on 06 Nov 07, 03:48:24
Yes, sometimes I like to "Spear" the cue ball, I get more cue elevation and it's easier to jump at close range. If I really want to control the cue ball I will stroke the cue ball with normal stroke and with less elevation, maybe on my next "Jump" video I will explain more... thanks for watching Dean's Pool Tips Dean

By: getlois. on 06 Sep 07, 15:34:17
Check your Stroke, this happens because you are not hittin center on the cue ball also check the elevation of your cue, don't be to jacked up... meaning lower the back end a little, see if this helps, again it's all in your stroke, keep it straight. Good Luck.... Dean
